Framing climate change in local context: Newspaper coverage of climate change in three mountain towns in the intermountain west compared to national coverage

Research examines how journalists cover and frame the issue of climate change in mainly nationally circulated newspapers. This study compares contrasts framing between two newspapers, New York Times Washington Post, three intermountain west, mountain town, community Jackson Hole News & Guide Hole, WY, Summit Daily County, CO, Park Record City, UT. research national versus coverage, coverage over time for years 2011 2016, communities, using five commonly used frames, responsibility, human interest, conflict, morality economic consequences. Results indicate there are statistically significant differences when comparing to newspaper as well papers, indicating importance local context media analysis more generally. Climate is a partisan issue, but newspapers may be less partisan, so analyzing at various scales adds our understanding different contexts shape which turn views on change.
